Picture Sources

Currently all of the items that I have added to the library have been photos that I have taken of items that I own.

I was wondering where people get their photos that they add. Are they pulled from artist's web sites? With or without their permission? From online stores, random tumblr feeds, etc?

Also, from Artists, what do you think of people using photos from your site to add to the library?

most of mine come from the actual artists page (or some promo image if there is one). gives things a nice consistent look on the portfolio pages!

Easily_Amused I agree! about 12 years ago

That's a good question. I've personally pulled them from everywhere, and I've tried to give credit ... especially when pulling a photo from flickr or the like. Most of the photos seems to be either from the artist, manufacturer, stores and galleries.

We've had a few requests since we've been live to pull down a photo or two and we've replaced them.

statusquo Does it matter what the photos look like? I've posted some recently from instagram or with backgrounds, how picky are you on the all white background? Is it more important than adding to the Library? almost 12 years ago

keegan a I'm picky but with the volume we've been getting it's been hard to be picky or edit them down. I've found a bunch of members just fix them later or find replacements too. :) almost 12 years ago

statusquo That's what I was thinking, I've gone back and fixed photos when I see better ones, so it sounds like you just want to fill the library and fix later? Thanks for the reply. almost 12 years ago

Interesting question, if it is an exclusive release I use the photo that the store that sponsored the exclusive has on their website, and credit their website as the source of the photo. If it is a product (I think this will hold for customs too) by an artist or specific company I go to their site and use the photo they provided of the item and give full credit and a point back to their website.

I believe it is free advertising and never even considered that they would have a problem with it.

Ultimately, I think of it similarly to image sourcing on sites like Pinterest. We like to give credit - wherever possible - to the photographers/artists/collectors who took the photos and send traffic their way. As for artists, I would generally think (hope!) they view this as free "press" for them & their work, as we get quite a bit of traffic.
