Dumb question about images

A lot of the time I have a picture that seems pretty big - then when I upload it here it looks too small. When I enlarge it, the resolution sucks. I see people fixing them after I upload them though - how do you enlarge photos without losing resolution?

One think I do that makes images appear 'small' is the extra white space around the image. If the image is cropped down closely to the figure it will make it appear larger in the thumbnail and main product page. The other thing that happens quite a bit is when you or someone else uploads a small image or one with a complicated background I just quickly search on google to see if I can find a better/larger image to use and I swap it out.
