So, I've been wasting, like anyone I guess, a small amount of resin each time I cast something. This means a half inch or so of cured resin in the bottom of a plastic cup in my garbage. The waste started bothering me, so I looked over some older art and found a wood carving I did that is a very simple, roughly 4x6 inch, rectangle. It seemed perfect as something to make a quickie mold of, so I did.

 (Below, the original wood piece)

Now when I cast, I keep this mold on my workbench, and all left over resin gets poured in (after I get my 'real' cast under pressure)

 (Below, a finished SLAB)

This means two things-

One, I'm no longer throwing away good material, and two - by using resin that would've been waste, there isn't really any cost to me. Even shipping is cheap because they are flat and strong, so not much is needed to ship them out.

So since these are nearly free to make, I figured I can't charge for them, so SLAB's retail price is zero dollars and zero cents. They are randomly gifted, but two sure ways to get in the pool of possible recepients are to like http://www.facebook.com/webecomemonsters or to buy something from me (Store is here). Do both and you essentially double your chances.

Some of these are very ugly since the materials are pretty random, almost none are a solid color. But they are free, and sometimes a metallic glitter x GITD X clear X stark white resin mess comes out looking cool!

Love this idea. I also like the chance element of it -- that by sheer luck you might end up with a really interesting-looking one.

Now I'm trying hydroshrink on this, may have some tiny ones in the future to throw in with every order if all goes well.

I'll know in a few weeks!

Easily_Amused What is hydroshrink? about 12 years ago

Webecomemonsters-trampt-539f

webecomemonsters v It is a shrinking resin. You mix it with water, pour the mold, wait 30 minutes or so, demold and then let it sit. It vapes off the water over time and shrinks. Then you make a new mold of that, usually after some cleanup (parts can fall off as it shrinks) and you have a smaller version of your original.. about 12 years ago

Easily_Amused Thats cool! Where did you learn all the techniques? Was it at an art school, or self taught? If self taught, any good resources you know? about 12 years ago

Webecomemonsters-trampt-539f

webecomemonsters v Both, but school was years ago. Smooth on's site is pretty good, loads of videos. Other than that just googling and translating my school knowledge into what i'm doing now. School was for FX, so it was a lot of soft material into rigid molds, casting resin is just the opposite. Way simpler than foam latex, that is for sure, and no baking! about 12 years ago

GrimmShepard v very cool, is that how you made the necrolameicons? over 11 years ago

Easily_amused-trampt-2928f

Easily_Amused I have both, I think the process is similar in that he made individual molds, but the Slab is made with the waste bits, where the NecroLameIcon is made from fresh resin. If you don't have a NecroLameIcon I'd recommend getting one (if it is still available). Mine is awesome and hangs out on my bookshelf taunting me at night as it Glows a malicious green in the dark. over 11 years ago

Easily_amused-trampt-2928f

Easily_Amused Though colors vary (Mine is Green GID, I think he said there were 2 Blue GID's made also)/ over 11 years ago

Webecomemonsters-trampt-539f

webecomemonsters v Yeah necrolameicon is a normal 2 part mold and is cast under pressure - slabs are open and just get whatever is left in the mixing cup spashed into the mold after whatever I'm actually casting has gotten under pressure. This means the necros and other items should have few or no bubbles and the slabs will have some, but hey, slabs are free ;) over 11 years ago

Webecomemonsters-trampt-539f

webecomemonsters v And yes, there are still some necrolameicons up in the shop, still doing free mini slab with every order as well. webecomemonsters.storenvy.com ! over 11 years ago
