Fixing an Object

This isn't exactly toy related, but I'm wondering if you can help me out. I'm wondering if any of you can recommend a bonding agent (glue) to attach Ivory to Bone. My sister sent me a Inuit art piece made of Whale Bone and Walrus Tusks. The whale bone has a natural shape of a walrus, so the artist super glued two tusks onto where the mouth would be. Unfortunately, the tusks came unattached when she mailed it to me. I could just re-hot glue gun them on, but was wondering if you knew anything better? The bone is hard and porous, the back side of the ivory is smooth and shiny.

I appreciate any help you can provide,

Jason

I've had some experience bonding bone to bone/ivory, super glue can be fantastic, but they are not all made equal! Don't use hot glue because it's impossible to deal with if it spreads to an area you don't want it, and inevitably effects the appearence and value of the piece. I would recommend Zap-A-Gap brand superglue (the kind in the green and white bottle). It can be a little harder to find but is the preffered modeling glue for those who do miniatures they want to handle on a daily basis for table top miniature games, and it is grear stuff. Zap-A-Gap was the original liquid stitches during the Vietnam war and the patent got picked up later and it's now super glue! The tiniest dab (enough that it doesn't spread outside the break when the pieces are combined) will generally hold a pound or two in my experience. If your dealing with something heavier try some of the two part epoxy putties they sell at most hardware stores, the faster the curing time the better cause you'll probably have to hold it the whole time it dries. Epoxy putties can be tough when trying to bond non porous materials, cause it won't stick well kinda like clay. Epoxy may discoulor it, try to only use a little so it doesn't moosh out the edges. Zap-A-Gap may as well discolour, and dries white, but once dried can be gently shaved off relatively flat surfaces with an Exacto knife, and will chip away like dried paint without damaging the surface below if done expertly. I hope that this is helpful!

Easily_Amused Thanks, I think the Zap-A-Gap should do the trick. The walrus tusks aren't too heavy. The Epoxy won't work because the ivory isn't porous (it's really smooth). There are a lot of hobby shops around here so it might be easy to find. over 11 years ago
