The question is two-fold when it comes to Trampt. Art in and of itself has a very loose definition ... what is art for some isn't necessarily art for others. On Trampt however, we've defined art as something that first has an 'artist' that created it and can be purchased & collected. At the same time we've tried to limited art that would be more closely defined as 'merchandise' such as keychains, clothing, etc.

What we have done in the past if remove certain piece of 'art' that simply isn't for sale, for example Graffiti on the side of building or something someone made in Photoshop but has never printed or sold it. As we approach 50,000 items in the site we want to make sure the site isn't clutter with random samplings of work by artists like a Deviant Art because at the end of the day we're trying to help artist sell their work, and collectors find it.

*Edit*
I have a feeling this is coming so I thought I would just add this thought about some manufacturers also being defined as artists ... for example 'Medicom' being listed as the artist on a variety of Be@rbricks. While clearly there was an artist for a Be@rbrick that has a starbucks logo on it, but should 'Starbucks' really be the artist? I also feel that since there are hundreds of Be@rbricks we should include the generic corporate ones because certain people still collect them. It's definitely a moving target but that's how I personally feel. Would love to hear more feedback.

humantornado To be fair though they never list the production artists names and you can't just leave the field blank. over 11 years ago

I think you are asking a couple of questions here. What makes "art" in general?... well lots of things, and they vary based on medium, what's true for music isn't true for cake decorating or interpretive dance or whatever. I can't really answer that.

What I can answer is what makes art for this particular website. You may notice that most of the pieces you see on Trampt can loosely fall into a limited number of art movements: Lowbrow, Pop, Surrealism, etc. The artists in these categories are the ones that most interest both those of us who currate this site, and those who come here to explore.

This brings me to another point: This site is currated. There is plenty of awesome stuff out there but not all of it fits here and there are things we just don't want popping up. No matter how good your classical painting of a sailboat, photograph of the Eiffel Tower at night, or bronze sculpture of a ballerina is, it just doesn't have a place here.

Hope that helps.
