About this Venue
Giant Robot Store, established in 2001 features products from around the world. Notably, fun house wares, gifts, stationeries, t shirts, comics, plush and toy figures. Giant Robot is often cited as the birthplace for Asian Pop Culture products and Uglydolls. GR2 Gallery features art exhibitions by notable artists like Katsuya Terada, Luke Chueh, David Choe, Mari Inukai, Deth P Sun, Rob Sato, Ako Castuera, Sean Chao, Yoskay Yamamoto, Uglydoll, and countless others. Cupco is the design, animation, illustration and doll-making brainchild of Luke Temby and his wife/muse Mayumi Temby. Born on the streets of Tokyo on skateboards and mass sticker pasting, and subsequently transplanted to Sydney, Australia, Cupco! both appreciates and satirises the ludicrous and ridiculous nature of modern society! We try to make good stuff and we can proudly say that we make almost no money from the world of Cupco! Blurb from Metropolis Gallery: *Cupco* animated cartoons have appeared on *Yo Gabba Gabba*,” original pieces have been part of several group shows at *Giant Robot*, as well as featured in the massive Pop Culture auctions at *Christie’s Auction House*. *Cupco* has made a limited edition sneaker for *Converse*, and the recent “U.N. of Cupco” held in Sydney Australia featured a diverse group of artists taking on the *Cupco* brand – including exclusive original pieces by Tado, Jon Burgerman, Le Merde, Dehara, Bwana Spoons and Shawnimals. A plush art toy is a collectible, artist-designed soft sculpture that blends elements of fine art, character design, and traditional plush toy craftsmanship. Unlike mass-produced plush toys, these are often handmade or produced in limited editions, featuring unique designs, high-quality materials, and intricate detailing. Artists and independent designers create plush art toys to express their distinct styles, often incorporating surreal, cute, creepy, or abstract aesthetics. They can be purely decorative or interactive, with elements like movable limbs, embroidered details, or mixed-media embellishments. Many plush art toys are sold through galleries, designer toy conventions, or directly by artists, making them sought-after collectibles in the designer toy community.
