While much of the wisdom of the Monkey Druids has been lost, we do know that they revered trees, and regarded the Elm as the tree of the dead. To this day, Elm is a popular timber for coffin-makers, although even this tradition is a dying one due to the blight of Dutch Elm Disease. The peculiar life-cycle of the Solstice Monkey also emphasises death and rebirth, as he carries a flaming torch with which to burn himself as the sun sets on the winter solstice. Many historians conjecture that this is an ancient ritual intended to allow the solstice monkey to be reborn as the sun, rising on the first day of its march towards spring. Others hint at a more sinister function, at terrible pagan rites, and imagine the Solstice monkey scooping up human sacrifices in its great hands as it burns itself and its victims to death so the sun may rise once moreā¦
