The public nominations closed, and the public voting begins for the 2013 Designer Toy Awards presented by Clutter. Like I mentioned in a previous post we were included in the 'Best Blog' category, but we need your votes until July 1st to make the final nominations that everyone will then vote on from July 23rd through September 1st. A surprise twist to this years DTA's is that we've been asked to join the DTA nomination committee and have a vote on some of the categories and pick finalists. We really appreciate that the folks over at Clutter appreciate our input and we'll do our best to be as objective as possible.
On a side note, since we don't know what categories we'll be voting on it would probably be best for any nominee in every category to start sending bribes our way ... just to be sure.
With all that out of the way I'd like to offer my own feedback on this years process, and hopefully we can get a good dialog going with you guys to help make next years even better.

I said something like this on Facebook:
I think that they should try and model it more after other arts-related awards because the "nominations" are a bit out of control and some don't make sense. Public contribution should be minimal - have the Fan Favorite Award, and the rest is decided by the Board. Artists and the public can privately submit works and artists for the Board's consideration. I know they try and get the public very involved and voting multiple times because they want more exposure, but it shouldn't be about that. There's also some growing pains I think with the change in becoming calendar year based in terms of works considered -there are pieces that were already up for awards last year again up this year. There are also some people nominated under Best Customizer who don't really customize much - they produce their own pieces. To me, a customizer takes an existing figure and customizes it. A couple are big names who will take votes away from actual customizers.

But I think instead of having everyone submit "nominations" they should be submitted to the board "for their consideration." Then a short list of nominations. Then winners. 50 nominations or whatever is ridiculous, and it's all just done for promotion. Now Clutter/DTA is everywhere because all the "nominees" are plugging themselves like crazy. It makes it less meaningful when anyone can be a nominee just by Joe Shmoe submitting it.

nicedream In all seriousness, for the legitimacy of the awards (and I think the awards are great for the scene) they should at least change the name of the huge list of people/companies/blogs etc to "For Consideration" instead of "nominees" if it's going to remain public. Then the short lists can be nominees. Just my opinion, since you asked. :) almost 11 years ago
To nicedream's and mgon's points ... I really believe the public nomination piece of this process is very important to make sure artists that some DTA 'voters' might not know about. Once public nominations are closed I do think it should just be up to whomever Clutter delgates to help them chose winners. Personally I would much rather win an award based on the opinions of my peers rather than who's fans remember to vote every 24 hours.

The voting pieriod is definitely too long! Waaay overkill. The hover-image does get in the way, and needs to go. I also think you should only be able to vote once per category, 'cause the way voting is set up now, whoever has the biggest fan base is going to win, 'cause all they need is just one vote, one time, to win. Most voters are not going to vote every 24 hours; that's way too much work. I had to set up 19 links with the name of who I'm voting for so that I could vote every 24 hours and remember who the heck I'm voting for in each category. That's just way too much. Better organization and rules are needed to give everybody a fair chance at winning.
