Designer Con is an annual art and design convention that smashes together collectible toys and designer apparel with urban, underground and pop art!
"Sideshow" is a group exhibit in our main gallery featuring circus-themed work from a talented and diverse roster of artists, curated by Stranger Factory co-owner Kathie Olivas. Sideshow features new works by Kathie Olivas, Jessica Joslin, Brandan Styles, Desiree Fessler, Valency Genis, Seymour (Peter Kelk), DrilOne, and Phil Noto. With works ranging from original drawings to paintings to sculptures and customs, Sideshow brings all the wonder, magic, and mystery of the circus to life.
In the Project Room, Stranger Factory brings new original works by Leecifer, a fan favorite. His new body of work, entitled "Real Live", brings his signature painting style to a new group of sculptures and customized figures. Featuring a bright and almost child-like color palette that has been worn and weathered, Leecifer's work looks like designer toys from a distant past...the lost designer vinyl of the mid-century.
Leecifer’s Long Dogs, presents the artist’s unique vision of the world unnoticed as customized vinyl toys, original sculpts, and paintings. Encountered as seemingly ordinary plants and animals hinting at an impossible intellect or ancient wisdom. Seen from the corner of your eye, a flash of golden scales is revealed to be but a Tabby’s fur; a serpentine shadow solidifies into one from a dachshund, improbable wings on a frog. Sometimes the glimpse becomes the knowing smile of a Boston Bulldog that, in passing, might have had catfish whiskers, or maybe even a turtle with too many heads. Or the sense that, even in times of harshest trial, there is a powerful presence shepherding and guiding you. This is the gift of a long dog. Possible dragons and unrecognized conduits of wonder and magic, hiding in plain sight.
In keeping the tradition of last year’s Winter Salon, Circus Annual will showcase new works from CP artists and friends at affordable prices just in time for the holidays. This year’s exhibition will feature art from Kathie Olivas, Brandt Peters, Chris Ryniak, Amanda Louise Spayd, Valency Genis, RAGNAR, Phil Noto, Glenn Barr, DrilOne, Leecifer, Yohei Kaneko, and Shigeta Tanaka. Resin editions, custom toys, small originals, prints, apparel and the like will be available, so after all the art lovers are scratched from your list, you’ll still have enough for a little self indulgence. ;)
Dunny Series 2011 artist Dril One is gearing up to his new solo show, “To A Life Consumed By Slow Decay” at Kidrobot Miami September 20. The SF based designer and customizer will be filling our South Beach store gallery with tons of freshly distressed toys and canvas.
