What is Garage Sale?
I recently moved east to Silverlake in Los Angeles. A place previously regarded as hipster central until the hipsters moved to Echo Park. What's here? A bunch of cool places are literally a stones throw away; bars, gay bars, cinemas, theaters, hip stores and eateries and a genuinely eclectic mix of folk. It has a completely different and open vibe to the West side.
What else? I now have much more space. At the end of the drive is a large two car garage, with concrete floors, white walls and lighting. It contains pretty much nothing - a blank canvas. Next to it is a vintage concrete sink that we pulled out of the house; its ideal to hold ice and beers. This is the venue for Garage (pronounced how I say it: "garr- ridge") Sale - a semi regular underground word of mouth art show/party. People come and hang out, drink some beer, talk crap, listen to some tunes, check out some affordable art and get excited.
What makes this different? What makes it different is that the artistic contributors decide their own prices and keep 100% of the proceeds. The idea is to show an eclectic quality mix of toys and art; maybe leftovers from a show, or experimental pieces, or just some cool pieces created especially. It's an alternative to galleries, not an attempt to take them on or step on their toes. No hype. No egos. No pretensions. The idea is fun.
How committed am I to this? Let's just say, my time is very precious, but I'd love to give this a shot and will put in the time needed to make it happen. I am currently paying $600 a month on two storage units which could be unloaded into this space. Money I'd love to use elsewhere, but I'm holding back to give this a shot and see where it goes. If you think it's a cool idea I'd love for you to be a part of it. My target is to get the first show up and running on Saturday December 1st.
Let me know what you think, feedback, comments and whether you'd like to contribute. For now I'm keeping this under wraps, and will send this only to a small group of folk who know me, and I hope also know that my aim is true. But, please feel free to discreetly pass this on to other artist friends who might also be interested in the idea and in contributing to the inaugural Garage Sale.
