About this Artist

One of the most prolific and recognizable artists alive today, Ron English has bombed the global landscape with unforgettable images, on the street, in museums, in movies, books and television. English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, populated with his vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters, including MC Supersized, the obese fast-food mascot featured in the hit movie “Supersize Me,” and Abraham Obama, the fusion of America’s 16th and 44th Presidents, an image widely discussed in the media as directly impacting the 2008 election. Other characters carousing through English’s art, in paintings, billboards, and sculpture include three-eyed rabbits, udderly delicious cowgirls and skull grinning popular cartoon characters, blending stunning visuals with the bitingly humorous undertones of America’s Premier Pop Iconoclast. Giclée (pronounced "zhee-clay") is a neologism for the process of making fine art prints from a digital source using ink-jet printing. The word "giclée" is derived from the French language word "le gicleur" meaning "nozzle", or more specifically "gicler" meaning "to squirt, spurt, or spray". It was coined in 1991 by Jack Duganne, a printmaker working in the field, to represent any inkjet-based digital print used as fine art. The intent of that name was to distinguish commonly known industrial "Iris proofs" from the type of fine art prints artists were producing on those same types of printers. The name was originally applied to fine art prints created on Iris printers in a process invented in the early 1990s but has since come to mean any high quality ink-jet print and is often used in galleries and print shops to denote such prints. The Outsiders galleries make buying and collecting art accessible and affordable. We exhibit twenty art shows and release over fifty different print editions every year via our galleries in London and Newcastle and our online shop. The Outsiders is part of Lazarides Ltd, noted for the popularisation of “urban art”. Many of our artists have succeeded outside of the traditional gallery system, emerging through popular fields like graffiti, design, and illustration; often self-taught, usually rejected by the art world. We deal with cutting-edge art, and are viewed as one of the world’s most influential galleries. You don’t need a degree in art history to be engaged by the work or enjoy it on the walls of your home, and are welcome to browse the artwork in our galleries. We sell original works and print editions, the latter produced to the highest standards at our own Execution Dock studio.
