About this Venue
Toy Tokyo is a renowned specialty toy store located in New York City’s East Village at 91 Second Avenue, between East 5th and East 6th Streets. Established in 2000 by owner Israel “Lev” Levarek, the store has become a haven for collectors and enthusiasts, offering a diverse selection of toys and collectibles. The store specializes in a wide range of items, including vintage and contemporary toys, action figures, designer art toys, and pop culture memorabilia. Much of its inventory is imported from Japan and Hong Kong, featuring products related to anime, superheroes, and iconic franchises. Notably, Toy Tokyo offers exclusive items from brands such as KAWS, Funko, Ron English, and Medicom Toy. One of the most prolific and recognizable artists alive today, Ron English has bombed the global landscape with unforgettable images, on the street, in museums, in movies, books and television. English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high and low cultural touchstones, from superhero mythology to totems of art history, populated with his vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters, including MC Supersized, the obese fast-food mascot featured in the hit movie “Supersize Me,” and Abraham Obama, the fusion of America’s 16th and 44th Presidents, an image widely discussed in the media as directly impacting the 2008 election. Other characters carousing through English’s art, in paintings, billboards, and sculpture include three-eyed rabbits, udderly delicious cowgirls and skull grinning popular cartoon characters, blending stunning visuals with the bitingly humorous undertones of America’s Premier Pop Iconoclast. Secret Base is a Japanese art toy company known for its highly collectible soft vinyl figures, often inspired by classic kaiju, horror, and pop culture icons. Founded in the early 2000s, Secret Base became a key player in the designer toy movement, creating limited-edition figures that appeal to both toy collectors and art enthusiasts. Their toys frequently feature collaborations with artists, brands, and even musicians, blending underground aesthetics with nostalgic elements. Many of their figures have a punk or DIY sensibility, often incorporating transparent or glow-in-the-dark materials, skeletal designs, and mashups of iconic characters.
