Disney, as a creator of art toys, has played a significant role in merging mainstream pop culture with the designer toy world. While traditionally known for mass-market merchandise, Disney has also ventured into the art toy and collectible vinyl scene, often collaborating with artists and brands to produce limited-edition figures that appeal to both collectors and fans of designer toys. Vinylmation (2008 - 2020) – One of Disney’s most notable art toy lines, featuring blank Mickey Mouse-shaped figures customized with different themes, characters, and designs. Many were designed by Disney artists, while some featured collaborations with external artists. Disney has worked with Medicom Toy on high-end BE@RBRICK and VCD (Vinyl Collectible Dolls) figures, often reimagining classic characters like Mickey, Donald, and Goofy in unique art styles. More recently, Disney has partnered with Pop Mart, a leader in designer blind box figures, to create stylized collectibles inspired by its iconic characters. While Disney primarily operates in the mainstream collectibles space, its influence on the art toy scene has helped bring designer toys to a wider audience, bridging the gap between mass production and artistic expression. Medicom Toy is a Japanese brand specializing in the creation of collection toys and figurines since 1996. It has been founded by Tatsuhiko Akashi. It all started with the Kubrick, a so -called standard figurine at the Lego and Playmobil border, a figurine made up of 9 blocks (in Japanese 九 (Kyū) means 9). This new format quickly was very successful and the kubricks will quickly take many licenses from Star Wars to the Planet of the Apes. In parallel Medicom Toy Produced toys of collecting art, sold in limited quantities and very quickly develops many ranges with the RAH (Real Action Heroes), the Mafex (Magical Action Figures Ex), the VCD (Vinyl Collectible Dolls) or even UDF (Ultra Detail Figure). But the planetary success will come with the Be@rbrick, an adaptation of the kubrick in a small bear version with a small plump belly. These figurines in the form of printed bear with different drawings and patterns will make the success of Medicom Toy putting the BE@RBRICK At the Pantheon of designer toy. Many artists and Brands have collaborated on this line of products, in particular Nike, Keith Haring or Kaws, but we also find characters from Movie theater from universes such Mickey Mouse has been a significant figure in the designer toy world, inspiring numerous art toy collaborations that reinterpret the beloved Disney character in unique and artistic ways. Various artists, including Ron English and Sket One, have produced unofficial Mickey-inspired art toys that offer satirical, surreal, or edgy interpretations of the classic Disney icon.
