Graphite is a versatile and widely used medium in art, primarily known for its soft, smooth texture and the ability to create fine details, shading, and gradients. It comes in the form of pencils or sticks, with varying degrees of hardness, ranging from very soft (6B, 8B) to very hard (H, 2H). The softness or hardness of the graphite determines the darkness or lightness of the marks it produces. When used in drawing, graphite allows artists to achieve a range of effects, from precise, sharp lines to soft, velvety shading. It is often favored for its ability to create tonal depth and realistic textures, making it a popular choice for portraiture, still life, and landscape drawing. Its subtlety and versatility also make it ideal for sketching and underpainting for larger works. Stranger Factory art space is proud to present “Bewitching” the first of an annual invitational group exhibition of new works in the theme and culture of vintage Halloween. The show will feature over 2 dozen local, national, and internationally recognized visual artists and designers. Featured artists include Sas and Colin Christian, Travis Lampe, Steve Lee, Emily Trovillion, Derek Yaniger, and Karen Peters. Artists were invited to find inspiration in the history of Halloween, including costuming and merchandise from a past long gone to the symbolism and icons of this fantastic hallowed holiday – black cats to witches, to the walking dead and pumpkin kings… When I was little I went to a private school. If you held hands, your name got written up. Relationships - real relationships - didn't exist. In highschool I was a pariah. Undersocialized and over educated, I was labeled many things. So, rather than friends or boyfriends, I developed relationships with the images in my head. I began to draw. Drawing is a relationship I am extremely comfortable with. I always begin with a drawing. Drawing directs everything. My discovery happens with a drawing; the painting part seems to be just an afterthought. In college, my drawings got better, and I began to draw things that had been in my head since eigth grade. My undersocialization as a girl has lent itself very strongly to my work. The figures tend to be strange girl-women, not quite children and not quite grown. The
