The Arctic Circle is a harsh climate that was once full of sea life and land animals. Our insatiable consumerist hunger has trapped, poached, and over fished these lands and has left them barren and void, save the few pods of life still holding on and struggling to procreate. Since the appearance of the giant frost Rhaal, no captain dares point his ship to those protected seas. No poacher walks the ice lands with traps or rifles. Only the First Nations peoples native to the regions are seemingly able to get around the water beast. The Rhaal rises from the waters and takes to land on nights when the Northern lights are strongest, making its way across the snow lands like a giant, lumbering patrol man.
