If you didn't see Gary Baseman's "The Door Is Always Open" at the Skirball Cultural Center, I can't even begin to describe what you missed (although I believe there's a glossy hardcover in the works for just that purpose). His enormous retrospective was absolutely stunning. Gary Baseman sets the bar not only as an insanely prolific painter, sculptor, photographer, and character designer, but also as a phenomenal installation artist. Walking into his exhibitions is like walking into the artwork itself, and if you're interested in checking it out, you have another opportunity this weekend. His new show, Mythical Homeland, is an extension of his show at the Skirball and will feature new paintings, drawings, and photographs from his travels to Eastern Europe. The exhibition opens this Saturday, October 5th at Shulamit Gallery in Venice, CA with a reception 7-9pm. Come explore Gary's ancestral and cultural roots in a forest of multi-dimensional birch trees, on display until December 14th.
