“Den of Foxes” (oil on wood, 24”x18”), my painting for the Bad Dads show at Spoke Art Gallery in San Francisco. Now that the show is open I can show you the finished painting! Bad Dads is a Wes Anderson tribute show where artists are to depict/re-interpret their favorite characters or scenes from any of his movies. I was really excited to be asked to participate in this. I love Wes Anderson’s movies and not only did I get to re-watch all of them, but I got to dig around and research what went into them. His movies are loaded with symbolism and personal touches. Working with such rich worlds was fun and also challenging, because I wanted to get it right while at the same time making it my own. The setting of Den of Foxes is taken from a scene in Hotel Chevalier with the addition of Mr. Fox from Fantastic Mr. Fox. It happened because, once I had chosen the scene from Hotel Chevalier, I felt like I was objectifying the nude Natalie Portman - what was my purpose for painting her this way aside from purely a
