I feel that collecting designer toys is certainly another medium to collect along side prints and fine art. So do you feel that Vinyl will stand the test of time and become legit art pieces that will go up in value as years pass? Or do you think it is just a strong fad right now that will fizzle out and we will be stuck with thousands of dollars of designer junk? Personally I want them to be worth something when my kids are older and they can say they have these by certain artists to go along with the prints and fine art we have.

Art as an investment is generally a bad idea. By the things you like and that you like having around you as a collector and you'll be happy. If your tastes change then try and sell it or trade it for something that appeals to you more. Stuff I have now used to sell for $400 on ebay in 2008, I bought it for $150 in 2010, might be worth $50 in 2013 ... doesn't matter to me because I like it.
The only thing that makes me a bit upset is if I buy something that I can get much cheaper later only because that was money wasted where i could have gotten something else. :)

There are really two questions here: 1. Are Vinyl Toys a legit art form? and 2. Will they hold their value?
1. Yes, I think so, but I am biased because I am a customizer. However before being a customizer I was an artist. I now almost exclusively make customs and have found it a very artistically challenging and interesting medium. As an artist/customizer, I have to admit that I have a lot of anxiety about the market fizzling out. But over the last 2 years I think that, if anything, it has expanded.
2. Some will and some won't. If you look at vintage action figures, a lot of them are now worth a fortune, so there is already a precedent for toys to gain value. And action figures are not generally considered an 'art form', just as collectibles. In fact I think vinyl toys have more value as collectibles than as 'legit art', although the destinction between the two is a bit hazy, as far as I can see it is just a matter of how they are marketed and sold.

Seriously? Who cares! I don't care for the cash value of my collection. I collect designer toys because I like the designs, the artists, the community, the story behind the toy. I'd like to belive that most collectors of designer toys start their collection this way.
It makes me sad to think that some people are collecting stuff just for the sake of making money off of it someday when its value increases and they don't even care for the art behind it. I know though that those people exist... in masses.
I like to collect art toys for me. Not for my friends opinion, not for my girlfriends taste, not to leave it as a legacy to my kids. My collection will always have the most value to me alone and nobody else. And that's good that way :)
Just my personal 2 cents :D

ELJEFE313 Same with designer toys....Im picky on what i buy and only collect a handful of artists and I love every single one I buy and know everything about it and the artist....but....when I realize im thousands of dollars into it...well it better hold some value... about 12 years ago
statusquo When I started out collecting several years ago I went nuts and bought anything and everything, I am pickier now, like you say ELFEFE313. I'm down to just a few artists I regularly collect and then add a few pieces here and there if I really like them. I've thinned, purchased then re-thinned my collection quite a few times over the years. about 12 years ago
I believe it will continue to gain traction as long as the whole Lowbrow art scene isn't a fad!
However, even if it is a fad and goes away as an art form most pieces are interesting and diverse enough to sell in flea markets... people are always looking for interesting things to furnish there house with.
