What type of collector are you?

I tend to only collect toys that are pink, blue, black or white, and like to collect things in multiples of 3s if I can... I was just wondering if anyone else out there collects in a certain way?

I started my collection with mostly smaller toys, as I am thinking most people on here probably did. Now, however, I think I would like to own some larger pieces, like the 8" Dunnys, Paw pieces, etc. I think they look more impressive on the shelves.

Necktie v i'm making that transition right now. (it's expensive!) about 12 years ago

Masao626-trampt-705f

masao626 oddly, i'm on reverse - i went for larger (8" and higher) pieces when i first started out and now am finding the joy in small pieces of art/vinyl. LOTS of the Super7 stuff is pretty and shiney and i really want it! :) about 12 years ago

Easily_Amused @Necktie What are you aiming for? @masao626 which pieces from Super7 are you after? about 12 years ago

Masao626-trampt-705f

masao626 @Easily_Amused I'm bordering on obsession with the Dokuduos, SD Dokuwashi, Pumpkin Boys and Pocket Mummy Boys...the list goes on :) about 12 years ago

Easily_Amused @masao626 Are you going to have them customized? about 12 years ago

Masao626-trampt-705f

masao626 no! i love them exactly as is, they're simply on my long list of 'go out and buy these' :) about 12 years ago

Easily_amused-trampt-2928f

Easily_Amused LOL! How long is the list? How do you prioritize? I use the Dali method. about 12 years ago

Masao626-trampt-705f

masao626 LOL! according to my 'want' list here, it's 900+ strong :) I usually gauge by the availability on websites which i check often and if they look to be big sellouts, i'll purchase - if they're regularly available on ebay, they go on the back burner. what's the Dali method? about 12 years ago

Easily_amused-trampt-2928f

Easily_Amused Dali Method: Determine Artist you most covet, discover the price range of their work (I use his prints and sculpture) that you can stretch to afford, and then compare the price and satisfaction of everything you purchase to this. If the value gained doesn't equal the percentage cost of the covetted piece save the money towards the Dali. about 12 years ago

Easily_Amused Saves you on a lot of misteps, except when your at a gallery and a piece gives you the fever and you impulse buy it... about 12 years ago

i tend to collect from specific artists, en masse. i truly enjoy building a body of their work and displaying the pieces in a rotating display in my home.

the tendency began for me when i first started collecting in 2004. there was a great deal of energy and new artists & customizers popping up litterally every week and i wanted to scoop up as much work as i could from up and comers before they were priced out of my range or caught on and it became a free for all.

Easily_Amused How do you feel you've done? The collection you have in the Owns section is amazing! about 12 years ago

Masao626-trampt-705f

masao626 @Easily_Amused awww..thank you for the kind words :) my method has worked for me and i'm very honored to have the pieces i have in my collection. the only risk one runs by this 'method' of collecting is that earlier, affordable pieces by artists are typically in mid-evolution so, in many cases, you better love the work and not view it exclusively as an investment opportunity ... about 12 years ago

Masao626-trampt-705f

masao626 ...because as they develop their style, their earlier pieces may pale in comparison and not retain value... (example: Kathie Olivas' paintings from 2005 vs. today - the styles are night and day)... about 12 years ago

Masao626-trampt-705f

masao626 ...My only regrets are the few instances where an artist has caught my eye but the prices were daunting and i thought i had more time to add their pieces to my collection (lori early, audrey kawasaki, greg simkins, etc). their prices then were dreamy compared to now :) about 12 years ago

Easily_amused-trampt-2928f

Easily_Amused I' ve found you have to rotate pieces otherwise they die. It's like putting paintings in museums, sure everyone gets exposed to awesome. But, a piece of the works soul is carried off by each view/viewer until it dies and becomes a stock image (any classic painting). about 12 years ago

Easily_amused-trampt-2928f

Easily_Amused I like having early works along with later works to fully illustrate an artists evolution. I also don't mind stretching to get a piece if I take the time to come to terms with the implications of buying it before purchase. It's the impulse buys I regret. about 12 years ago

Easily_amused-trampt-2928f

Easily_Amused Thanks for the insight on your methods of collecting! I wish I knew Audrey Kawasaki's work back then... :) about 12 years ago

Masao626-trampt-705f

masao626 agreed. i've been fairly fortunate that my impulses have paid off but every once in awhile, yeah, something will arrive in the mail and i'll be like 'ugh. cripes, now what am i gonna do with this?'. about 12 years ago

Easily_amused-trampt-2928f

Easily_Amused LOL! I have the closet of doom. If you have a standard closet, the wall space behind the clothes is a great unused resource for unloved children. Plus if its in the guest room you can say you really do have monsters hiding in the closet! about 12 years ago

masao626 LOL! about 12 years ago

wow, very specific. i've recently shifted my focus away from manufactured sets and more towards individual artists. other than that, i'm not really sure what type i am. i also have a tendency to keep my collection relatively small (unlike most people on here it seems!), so my habit is to sell a few things if i plan to make a big purchase.

Masao626-trampt-705f

masao626 serioulsy, hats off to you. i think i'd lapse into a coma if i tried to sell something! i'm also very certain they will find my body one day, buried beneath a pile of toys, with only my feet sticking out. about 12 years ago

Easily_amused-trampt-2928f

Easily_Amused @ masao626 LOL! For me it was always a pile of books and comic boxes stacked on top like a grave mound in brittain, but no feet showing. about 12 years ago

I for myself find simple designs and shapes most appealing. Therefore I favor single colored or diy, blank, unpainted toys because this way the platform / design of the toys can be enjoyed unobstructed.

I am not a big fan of super detailed toys (like the 3a stuff) or customs that change the form of a toy.

I like it the most when an artist is able to create a whole new character of an platform just by applying some paint and their specific style. Therefore some of my favourites are the Jon Burgerman dunnys, FAKIR's stuff and the customs from Stuart Witter and MApMAp because they respect the platform but create unique characters.

Currently I'm on Safari, Hunting the pieces I find the coolest and most amusing down. But, I assume my style will change as my collection develops.
