This is an awesome piece and is done very cleanly. I personally think that no one "owns" a style, they can be known heavily for it but it isn't theirs to with hold from others attempting. Ya Freeny does this in his work, people also said he ripped KAWS when he came out. No matter what there are going to be people with overlapping styles / similarities.

Respect v Its a shame when someone says that about a persons style, everyone starts somewhere, gets inspired by something etc. Styles evolve from inspiration. over 11 years ago
izzy yes! this piece is as clean as clean can be! like i said, this is one of Rafael's "styles". he and I are already planning the next tequila so get ready to see more from this guy soon :) over 11 years ago
Um ... so this isn't Jason Freeny?

I was sure that Freeny comparisons would surface, and Rafael does acknowledge this and does site Freeny as a source of inspiration.
I feel there is much room for more than one anatomical sculptor in the vinyl space, and this is only one of the styles that Rafael works on. He has shown me some of his other projects and they are all amazing. over 11 years ago
keegan a I'll have to check out his other work, and I don't think 'anatomical' sculpting belongs to Freeny; however, I do feel like on a designer toy is kind of his thing. If Rafael chose another medium like showing a piece of fruit or stuff animal 3/4 dissected it would feel more original I guess. over 11 years ago
webecomemonsters v Secret base (and others) do production toys like this, there are the awesome Kaiju anatomy illustrations in the same vein, and I've seen multiple artists do this with plush as well, it isn't a Feeny thing, he's just very prolific. That said, anatomy aside, the style used here is very feeny-esque (the way the bones and guts actually look, teeth, etc.. same cartoony almost simpsons like feel) over 11 years ago
Potentially over-complex piece, but well executed. Also, the poncho is a very nice touch!

I like it, but it is definitely done in Jason Freeny's style. The main body of Jason Freeny's work is disecting other peoples designs. However, I agree that doing anatomical sculpture isn't only his.

keegan a I agree ... I remember when someone did a panda dunny custom and everyone said he was ripping off Woebots. I couldn't see a similarity in their styles other than they were both pandas. over 11 years ago
