Update on our book 'Deconstructing Designer Toy'Potentially looking for new publisher to speed up release date

For those people unfamiliar with what I'm talking about, back in November I made a newspost calling for artists to participate in an upcoming book we wanted to produce titled 'Deconstructing Designer Toys'. In this book, toy customizers would submit some of their work, and then as part of the submission they would describe the process for one of their pieces ... triumphs, difficulties, etc. Hopefully, making this a bit more than a typical toys/portfolio book with pretty pictures. We put the book together in about 6-7 weeks from start to finish, in order to hit a July 2012/SDCC release date. Well, it looks like our release date is around early 2013 so we're trying to explore our options.

How are you going to get it published earlier?

I've reached out to a few contacts I have to try and get the book published for SDCC, and worse case scenario by NYCC; however, it's not looking too good. That said, if we can't find another publisher who can help us get the book out earlier we can still release the book with our currently publisher in 2013. I also thought announcing our situation might get into the ear of the right person who might be able to help. This situation also presents us with a few unique opportunities to update the book a bit.

Adding more artists & updating current pieces

Until I have a new deadline in place from either our existing publisher or a new one, I'm considering the book temporarily open again. I asked to artists to participate but they couldn't meet the original ridiculous timelines due to their current obligations, so I will be reaching out to them again. Also there were a few requests by artists already in the book wishing to include a new piece they finished after our original deadline passed and we weren't able to include it. While we want to be accommodating in updating some pieces we would also like to avoid re-designing a book that is essentially completed. So this will probably happen on a case by case basis. *Edit - I've uploaded shots to a flickr set about the book so everyone can see the spreads a bit larger.

Next steps ... PLEASE don't send requests

If you're already in the book please look for the email that I've just sent out if you want to add/update an existing piece you've already submitted. If you aren't currently in the book please do not send unsolicited requests to be included right now. There are already 70+ artists I'm managing, and while there is room for a few more, I don't have the time to sift through another 100+ emails like the last time. Rest assured if this book does well there will be another one to follow shortly after.

Finally, who's in the book so far?

I ran around like a crazy person trying to meet our original deadline so I don't even know if all of the artists I have in the book know they are in it. Hopefully the list below isn't a surprise to anyone and to everyone else I hope it shows how potentially awesome this book is and how badly we want to get it published as fast as we can.

artists include:
A Little Stanger, Abell Octovan, artmymind, AW177, Carson Catlin, Chauskoskis, Cris Rose, DMS, DrilOne, Eric Pause, Fakir, Ferg, Frank Mysterio, Fuller Designs, Grapheart, Grimsheep, Gumpy, Ian Ziobrowski, Igor Ventura, J★RYU, Jason Freeny, JC Rivera, Jeremiah Ketner, Jester, Jimmy Foo, Jon Knox, Jon-Paul Kaiser, Josh Pearce (F+), Kano, Keithing, Kevin Gosselin, Leecifer, Lisa Rae Hansen, MapMap, Matucha, Michal Miszta, Mike Slobot, Motorbot, Nerviswr3k, NikeJerk, Pepe Hiller, PodgyPanda , Reactor 88, Rotobox, Rsinart, RunDMB, Scott Tolleson, Sergio Mancini, Spankystokes (John Stokes), Squink, Steve Talkowski, Tan-Ki, Task One, Tharp, Tim Munz, Tyler Coey, UME Toys (Richard Page), VISEone, We Kill You, WuzOne, and Yosiell Lorenzo
