Missed deadlines and extended waiting on pre-orders?

There are a variety of brands, especially threeA (3A) and Coarse, that have been doing the pre-order thing for a while now which much success. As a business owner I would love to pre-sell product before it's manufactured and save the up-front costs and worry that it might not sell.

My problem with this is more on the collector/fan side of this arrangement. I have zero problems pre-ordering and waiting for my item to be delivered three months from now. However, when you know you're going to miss that date or it has already passed a bit of communication goes a long way. I remember huge delays with a variety of figures, mostly from defunct companies, but I'm just amazed how certain companies keep getting away with this and not alienating their fans?

It's interesting, I feel like I've been on both ends of this. When you expect a large volume of product to be shipped from overseas, you get an optimistic delivery date from the factory, and you hold that date. As the brand you carry all the risk of developing the product, and in a way, you hope that everything just goes smoothly and quickly so that you can move on to the next thing. The estimated date is what you give your customers and it's what you build all your plans on, but the estimated date rarely accounts for frequent shipping delays due to "rough seas" and shared containers being closely inspected by customs. All of this amounts to an annoying but understandable standpoint for the brands, however I do think it's important for businesses to strive for good communication. It's a big job to write an email to 100+ customers with bad news, but it's your job.
